Company Secretary Course — Everything You Need to Know Before You Start

CS stands for Company Secretary. The entire course — from the entrance stage through to the final qualification — is designed and conducted by ICSI, the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, which is the statutory body responsible for regulating the CS profession in the country.

The most common starting point is CSEET (CS Executive Entrance Test), which any student who has passed or is appearing in Class 12 (any stream except fine arts) can register for. After clearing CSEET, you move into CS Executive, then CS Professional, and finally complete a period of mandatory practical training before applying for ICSI membership. If you’re a graduate or already hold a CA or CMA qualification, you can skip CSEET entirely and register directly for CS Executive instead.

Eligibility differs by stage. For CSEET, you need to have passed or be appearing in Class 12, in any stream except fine arts. For CS Executive, eligibility opens up to CSEET clearers, graduates, postgraduates, and CA/CMA-qualified candidates — the last three groups can skip CSEET and register directly. For CS Professional, you must have cleared both groups of CS Executive; there’s no direct-entry shortcut into this final stage.

Realistically, most students complete the full journey — all three exam stages plus the mandatory 21-month practical training — in around 3 to 4 years from the time they start with CSEET after Class 12. This assumes steady progress without needing repeat attempts at any stage. Students who enter directly into CS Executive (graduates, CA/CMA-qualified) typically complete the journey somewhat faster, since they skip the CSEET stage entirely.

CSEET covers four papers: Business Communication, Fundamentals of Accounting, Economic and Business Environment, and Business Laws & Management. CS Executive covers seven papers across two modules, including Jurisprudence and General Laws, Company Law, Securities Laws, Financial Management, Tax Laws, and more. CS Professional covers advanced topics across roughly 8 to 10 subjects, depending on electives chosen, including Governance, Risk Management, Compliance and Ethics, Advanced Tax Law, and Drafting. Each stage builds directly on the concepts introduced in the one before it.

Costs vary depending on whether a student studies independently or joins coaching, and which stage-wise combination they choose (single group vs. both groups, online vs. offline, with or without test series). ICSI’s own registration fees apply separately at each stage — CSEET, Executive, and Professional — each have their own registration cost set by ICSI directly, in addition to any coaching fees. For an accurate current total, it’s best to check ICSI’s official fee notification alongside whichever coaching combination a student is considering, since coaching costs alone can range from a few thousand rupees for a single subject to tens of thousands for a full multi-stage package.

Fresher salaries for newly qualified CS professionals generally fall between ₹3 and ₹6.5 LPA, though this varies meaningfully depending on internship quality, drafting skills, and which city or company a candidate joins. With 3 to 5 years of experience, salaries typically move into the ₹6–12 LPA range, and senior professionals with 10+ years of experience — particularly those in Key Managerial Personnel roles at listed companies — can earn ₹15–25 LPA or considerably more. It’s worth treating any single salary figure with some skepticism, since published ranges genuinely vary quite a bit across different salary-survey sources — the honest answer is a range, not one number.

It’s commonly perceived as somewhat more accessible than CA in terms of exam difficulty and training duration, though “easier” undersells how demanding CS Professional specifically can be. The CS course generally has a shorter overall training requirement than CA, and many students find the subject matter — corporate law, governance, and compliance — more approachable than CA’s heavier accounting and audit focus. That said, difficulty is genuinely subjective and depends a lot on a student’s own strengths; a student with a strong grip on legal reasoning may find CS more natural, while someone stronger in numbers might find CA or CMA a better personal fit.

Qualified Company Secretaries typically move into roles like in-house Company Secretary, Compliance Officer, Legal Advisor, or Corporate Governance Expert within MNCs, listed companies, or PSUs. Many also choose to set up an independent practice as a Practising Company Secretary (PCS), which comes with its own separate income potential based on client base and specialization. Since a Company Secretary is recognized as Key Managerial Personnel under the Companies Act, there’s also a defined path toward senior governance and board-advisory roles with enough experience.

As part of qualifying as a Company Secretary, ICSI requires candidates to complete a period of practical training — typically around 21 months — either with a practising Company Secretary, a company, or through recognized alternate training routes. This training is where theoretical exam knowledge actually gets applied to real compliance work, board processes, and drafting, and it’s a mandatory requirement before a candidate can apply for ICSI membership, regardless of how well they’ve scored in the exams themselves.

For students genuinely interested in corporate law, governance, and compliance work, CS tends to offer a strong return on investment — relatively lower course costs compared to some alternatives, combined with steady salary growth and increasing demand as companies face tighter governance and compliance requirements. It’s not necessarily the “highest-paying” option starting out compared to CA in the earliest years, but experienced CS professionals in governance and KMP roles often earn comparable, and sometimes higher, packages over a full career.
