CA Foundation is the entry-level examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for students aspiring to become Chartered Accountants.
It tests a student’s understanding of accounting, business laws, mathematics, logical reasoning, and economics.

Any student who has passed or is appearing in Class 12 from a recognized board can register for the CA Foundation course. There is no age limit or stream restriction – students from Commerce, Science, or Arts can apply after 12th.

Registration is done online through the ICAI portal. The registration fee for Indian students is ₹9,000. You must register at least four months before your intended exam session.

The CA Foundation course has four papers:

1. Principles and Practice of Accounting

2. Business Laws & Business Correspondence and Reporting

3. Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning & Statistics

4. Business Economics & Business and Commercial Knowledge

• Each paper carries 100 marks and is 3 hours long.

• Papers 1 and 2 are subjective (descriptive).

• Papers 3 and 4 are objective (MCQ-based).

• There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer in objective papers.

The CA Foundation exams are conducted three times a year – in January, May/June, and September.

You must score at least 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate across all four papers to pass the exam.

On average, 4–6 months of consistent preparation is recommended. Students should study daily, revise regularly, and solve multiple mock tests and previous year papers.

CA Foundation is challenging but it is generally considered the easiest level of the CA exam. It lays the basic groundwork in accounting and commerce. With regular study, practice and the right resources, most students can pass. Remember, thousands of students clear Foundation each cycle by preparing steadily and using ICAI’s study material and practice tests

There is no fixed limit on the number of attempts. Since exams are now held three times a year, you can keep taking the exam in successive sessions until you pass. Many students clear Foundation on the first or second try, but you have the flexibility to try again if needed.

No. There is no minimum percentage requirement for Foundation eligibility, only that you must have passed (or be appearing in) Class 12. You don’t need a particular score in boards to register. (The percentage matters only for direct entry into Intermediate, as mentioned above.)

 Graduates and postgraduates can skip Foundation through the Direct Entry route. Commerce graduates (or PGs) with 55% marks, and other graduates (or PGs) with 60% marks, can directly register for CA Intermediate without doing Foundation. For example, if you are a B.Com graduate with 57%, you would join at the Intermediate level. This is an exemption provided by ICAI; otherwise, most students enter via Foundation after 12th.

Yes. As mentioned, CA Foundation is open to any stream after 12th. Your Class 12 subjects do not restrict you. Whether you studied science, commerce or arts in school, you can enroll in the Foundation course.

Once you pass all Foundation papers, you move on to the CA Intermediate course. You will register for Intermediate, complete further study and practical training, and then appear for Intermediate and Final exams. After completing both levels (Intermediate and Final) and the required practical articleship, you qualify to become a Chartered Accountant.
