CSEET refers to the Company Secretary Entrance examination conducted by the ICSI every year. Company secretary aspirants have to pass this exam in order to gain entry into what is known as one of the most sought after professional certification courses of all time.
Now many of you may ask what logical reasoning in entrance exam is. Paper 2 in the CSEET examination is the Logical reasoning and legal aptitude test. This paper contains 2 major parts.
- Part A- legal aptitude
- Part B – logical reasoning
Students usually tend to get scared of this exam since logical reasoning which comes in the paper for around 25 marks is an analytical paper and requires skills, techniques to be solved.
The paper also contains the most lengthy syllabus out of all the papers. However, with proper preparation anyone can score good enough marks in this subject.
Now, let us answer the most simple question – what is logical reasoning?
In a literal sense, logical reasoning means taking a rational decision considering all the given facts and circumstances of the situation.
To make studying this subject systematic and easy, ICSI has divided the whole syllabus of this subject into 3 parts-
- Logical reasoning
- Verbal reasoning
- Non- verbal reasoning
Following is a discussion of each of these parts in detail:
Part-1 : Logical Reasoning
This part is divided into further sub-chapters including calendars, clocks, coding decoding, cause and effect reasoning, deriving conclusions from passages, drawing inference, number test, sequence and series, statement and assumptions.
If you look closely, then these are basically the kind of topics which students study in their senior secondary education. So the part 1 can be easily cracked if you had conceptually understood these topics in your class 12th. Some topics which were not in your class 12th syllabus will be additional.
However, that does not necessarily mean that students will have to devote a lot of time to this subject. Since, a whole lot of area in this subject depends on the student’s aptitude and alertness to the question, there is a huge possibility that even without any thorough preparation, you may be able to crack this subject.
Part-2: Verbal Reasoning
This part is divided into topics like alphabet test, alpha numeric sequence puzzle, analogy, assertion and reason, blood relations, decision making, inserting missing characters, logical sequence test, logical venn diagram, number, ranking and time sequence test, syllogism, truth tellers and liars.
Part – 3 Non-verbal Reasoning
This part consists of analytical reasoning, classification, completion of incomplete pattern, figure matrix, grouping of identical figures, mirror image, rule detection, numeric of alphabet series.
This is the logical reasoning full course. So in a nutshell, the Part 1 is partially math based, students who have a mathematical aptitude can easily score good marks in that part. With practice, you will be able to polish your hands in this part.
The part 2 is also logical however it will have more English based questions. And the part 3 is essentially a diagram based part. The question will mostly contain figures and the students will have to observe those figures and then answer the questions.

Having a bird eye view of the topics may seem that it will take a lot of time and energy to prepare for these topics, however on the contrary, the topics are diverse but easy to study.
If all the topics are prepared with dedication and focus, then there is no point in losing even a single mark. It is a scoring subject and should not be a source of exam fear.

If X is the brother of the son of Y’s son, how is X related to Y?
The answer to this question is Grandson. The logic being that son of Y’s son is grandson; brother of Y’s grandson- Y’s grandson. So X is Y’s grandson.
A-2 Logical reasoning is a part of the Paper 2 of CSEET examinations. Paper 2 also contains a legal aptitude part. The logical reasoning area carries 25% weightage in this paper and contains questions in areas of verbal, non-verbal and logical reasoning.
A-3 A logical reasoning question is essentially the one where you are given a set of facts, which may be a patter, a series, a story, a structure, a problem and the student is required to come up with its solution using the most logical approach that they can think of. It is based on the premise that there is only one logical solution to a problem and that will be the most rational one, inconsiderate of the common myths, stereotypes etc.
A-4 In the entrance exam, logical reasoning will carry around 25 marks and will contain topics like coding decoding, drawing inference, number test, sequence and series, statement and assumptions, classification, completion of incomplete pattern, figure matrix, grouping of identical figures, mirror image, rule detection.
A-5 There is no one straight answer to this question. However many of you will find it easier to attempt the paper if you have done enough practice of the kind of questions that usually come in the examinations. Some questions can be solved by common sense, however some questions will require you to think in a particular way or apply a particular method, or attempt a certain kind of approach to reach at the correct answer figure. That is where practice will play an important role. The more you have practiced the more types you would have covered and so more are the chances of you recognizing and solving a question.
Logical reasoning paper in itself is not difficult. It the myths that make it so. If a student is willing to take out some time and practice and study with a focused mind, he or she can easily get through the paper.
